In sum, the Historisches Wörterbuch der Biologie represents a benchmark of the historical research on biology's core concepts, although-or maybe precisely because-it has been authored by a single person who takes a particular philosophical position rather than staying neutral. Hopefully it will inspire future research not only in history of science. Rather, it may help to historically inform a number of current debates in philosophy of biology, especially those related to the concepts of organism and function, and thus save the field from turning into an ahistorical science-a science like today's biology
